antique stained glass restoral?

I have a piece of 70 yo antique stained glass that I want to restore myself. someone told me to make a fine paste out of plaster of parris and water and rub thouroughly into where the lead touches the glass and then wipe off with a sponge then polish with terry cloth towel. He says this will not only clean the glass but seal up any leaks as well. does any one know if this really works? thanks

WRONG!!! Use window glazing putty to seal the glass in the lead came. Rub it your hands first to warm it up than force it into crevices. Polish window with a dry terry cloth towel.

  1. Don't have a clue, but it sounds plausible.

  2. I've never heard of it, but I'd try it on an old regular piece of glass first…
I can just see me pulling a "Lucy" and having to chip it off after it hardened and breaking all the glass.

Those older glass pieces contain lead and you have to be careful. Good old fashioned vinegar and water and wipe dry with newspaper. That's what it was probably cleaned with forever, so I'd go with that, and if it needs soldering, see a glass specialist.
